Reply: (edit)How many devices? 2nd HDD should not be paired up with the 1st. It should be on the 2ndary channel. If it's by itself, it would be the master, if it's with an optical drive, it would be slave. Don't use cable select. Reply: (edit)"what do you mean how many devices? And what is secondary channel?" Are you serious?? There are almost always two IDE channels on a motherboard...a primary channel & secondary channel. They can be labeled as IDE-0 & IDE-1, sometimes IDE-1 & IDE-2. Each channel supports 2 drives (or devices)...a master & a slave. So you can have 4 total devices: primary master primary slave 2ndary master 2ndary slave The IDE configuration is different depending on how many devices you have & what they are. Here's some general recommendations: 2 devices: primary master = HDD w/OS primary slave = none 2ndary master = optical reader or writer or 2nd HDD 2ndary slave = none 3 devices: primary master = HDD w/OS primary slave = optical reader 2ndary master = optical writer 2ndary slave = none 3 devices: primary master = HDD w/OS primary slave = none 2ndary master = optical reader or writer 2ndary slave = 2nd HDD 4 devices: primary master = HDD w/OS primary slave = optical reader 2ndary master = optical writer 2ndary slave = 2nd HDD ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP1

Reply: (edit)If you only have one channel and/or you insist on connecting both drives to the same cable, make sure the second hard drive is 'correctly' plugged as the 'Slave'.

Reply: (edit)Main HD as Master on cable #1 Second HD on cable #2 as either Master or Slave. Where you put the DVD drive depends on which drive you will be burning from the most. You want it on a different cable then the drive you burn from most.

Reply: (edit)Oh Jeez, WinXP and the old 'RAW' drive thingy. That problem shows up every once in a while. Sometimes the problem goes away and the drive turns out to be OK. I think it's a WinXP bug. I've suggested before to try physically disconnecting the drive, rebooting, power off and reconnecting the drive. I haven't heard back if that works or not. Maybe someone else has an idea.

Reply: (edit)Do a search (top of the screen) in the WinXP forum for 'raw' and you will see dozens of problems with 'raw' HDs. You might want to look at these in particular: http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/84309.html http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/88629.html Here are some recovery programs suggested: Disk investigator http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html PC inspector www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm http://www.partition-recovery.com/

Reply: (edit)After doing some more investigation, it sure looks like this 'RAW' problem is a bug in the NTFS. I found lots of failures in Win2K and NT as well as WinXP, but none in Win9X (FAT32) systems.

Reply: (edit)One suggestion that I ran into that seems worth a try is to use the 'Recovery Console' and run 'FIXMBR'. You might also checkout what was done in: http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/84309.html The only other thing I could suggest is to try one of the data recovery programs suggested in response #13. Also, Ontrack has a great recovery program: http://www.ontrack.com/
