Won't detect hard drive?

Dell Vostro 3400 notebook

Earlier today I had my laptop on plugged into the power supply and was running fine. I left it up and plugged into the wall for about 45 minutes or so, came back, and it was beeping at me (I counted twelve each time I tried to start it up) and I'm getting a screen that says "Reboot and Select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

Now, I'm no computer expert (obviously) but I ran a diagnostic on it and it came back saying that it could not detect the hard drive.

My question is why it all the sudden couldn't detect the hard drive, and if it can be fixed without having to get a new harddrive.

Hard-drives do fail, and a machine that doesn't recognize one is a good indicator. If you haven't already, try finding the hard-drive manufacturers' web site and see if there are any tools to help diagnose your problems...
