I need to find out if there is a security appliance out there like a hardware firewall for wireless. I have a customer who uses his laptop wirelessly and is worried about his security. He uses it on the free services at hotels and restaurants while he is out on the road and is worried about people hacking him. Is there a security device some type of hardware firewall that protects against this? I know that Zyxel makes a Zywall P1 which is a portable wired firewall device but I need a wireless device. If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions or knows of any devices please let me know. Thanks in advance.

Hardware firewall is a standrad built-in feature of routers. Without a router you don't have hardware firewall. But if you have a good software firewall (i.e. Zonealarm) and you keep Windows updated, run updated antivirus, do occaisional antispyware scan and you have XP SP2 installed, then you should be OK.
The "free services at hotels and restaurants" that you speak of is called wireless hotspots. They are dangerous but if you practice what this article recommended you should be OK.
Lastly as a safety measure - never ever store anything personal on a laptop while using public hotspots.
