Is Bluetooth the only game in town with regards to wireless networking etc. or are there any alternatives. If so are they any good?

Bluetooth isn't for networking, it's meant as a low range (<5m) wireless system for 'attaching' peripherals to your PC - phones, printers, headsets etc. For networking you need wireless cards/hubs etc. - put 'wireless networking' into Google & see how much info there is

Does that mean that wireless network cards only have a range of <5meters?

no no...wireless cards have quite a long range. it depends more on your wireless router/hub. i've seen ones with 2.4ghz range, and a 5ghz..which is sufficient if your using the network in the same house.
you'd need to buy a wireless hub set it up, and then buy wireless cards for your comptuers. most wireless hubs come with regurlar ports where you can use just regular ethernet (rj-45) cable too incase you want to set up some computers with wires.
good luck
