found my old computer bought an acer wireless card-installed it. It states that it is getting a good connection but I cannot log on to the internet.
Might have to lower encryption. Not sure how good that was.

If this is a Win 98 PC, you will have to type winipcfg at a command prompt to check IP address info, including the DNS server setting. Make sure it is the correct setting for your Internet connection.
