I have the following problem.
My config is this:
Asus A7V8x mB
AMD Athalon 2200 +
768 mb DDR 400
MSI Geforce4 TI 4800 128mb
17'' Samsung monitor
Windows XP Professional
6 weeks ago some wird colored vertical lines/bars showed up on my screen. From boot up screen to windows. Even on the Bios screen.I assumed it was a video card problem so I replaced it with an old PCI S3 Virge and sent the Gforce to the shop to be replaced.
The S3 worked fine.As the guys at the shop were taking way too much time to replace the board (4 weeks) I complained and they lend me a temporary onr until mine was fixed. The lend me a gforce 4 TI 4800.
When I pluged it to the pc I got the exact same problem. As the PCI S3 Virge worked fine I assumed it was the motherboard's AGP slot. So I bought another motherboard (also an Asus A7V, they are cheap now :) )
Same problem.
At this point i assumed that it was other component doing it. So i removed everything leaving only the PC case, Motherboard, CPU and AGP gfx card.
Same problem.
So the agp card is new and the mother board is new. There is no memory on the board so it must be the CPU or the PC case (witch i highly doubt).
It's not the monitor because it works fine even in high resolution with the PCI card and if I connect any of the AGP cards to the TV I get the same problem.
Any ideas ?
I read somewhere today that having a TV set connected to the electricity near the PC (witch i have)can cause simmilar efects. Something called "AC line noise" so I will try unpluging the tv set today and I'll post here if it solves the problem.

Hey,
My Dad's 21" Dell monitor has the same problem (only his are horizontal not vertical). He was told by Dell techies that the reason it was doing that was that the monitor was beginning to go bad. My guess is that if it doesn't do it with the older PCI card that the newer AGP cards have enough more output power/voltage that they are messing up the monitor and that if you continue with the PCI card eventually it will do it with that as well. You might look into replacing your monitor. You can get computer parts cheap online from www.tcwo.com and they'll only charge you $8.00 shipping (pretty good for a monitor!) Hope you resolve your problem!

Ok it's not the tv set near pc that is causing it.
I've also borrowed a monitor to check if it was mine. The problem persists even with a diferent (and working) monitor.
Can it be the cpu causingit or somesort of problem with the pc case/power suply.

That's one helluva good question at this point.
Would you ask the shop to lend you a radeon card of some sort and give it a try?
It's possible you may still have an emi problem in that room so you might want to move the machine to another room to see if the problem persists.
TV's and cheap neon lamps are the most likely causes of interference. It's not so much ac line noise as it is the leakage of high voltage from the appliance. House fans can also create havoc if placed near a monitor. The house fan would be a better example of ac line noise.
Good luck...like to hear how this turns out.

I'm having a somewhat similair problem - I have 5 vertical lines across my screen, and when my mouse moves over them it "vanishes behind them", they are drawn only in windows screen.
Here's some of my troubleshooting:
a) Used dad's comp (AMD Athlon Firebird 1GHZ CPU, Soyo mboard), my GeForce 4 ti4400 128 MB, his monitor && my monitor = no problems.
b) Used my comp (Asus A7N8X 333FSB mboard, AMD Athlon XP 2500+ series 1.83ghz CPU), dad's GeForce2 Pro = no problems
c) Used my comp, my video card, dad's monitor = vertical line problem.
d) Used dad's comp, my monitor = no problemsI should also note that all drivers are up to date, and that I have readjusted and readjusted and readjusted several BIOS settings to no avail. I should also note with the same monitor, motherboard, cpu, and video card, this computer has been running like a charm for a year without problems until now.
I really think it's a virus on my HDD, but I tried formatting and it, reinstalling... and it didn't fix it. IN fact, before anything was installed, the problem was there.
It can't be the videocard. It works on my dad's machine.
It can't be the AGP slot. It works with my dad's video card.
It can't be the monitor. See above.
~~Confused Lock.

I forgot to mention OS, both machines run Windows 2000 Professional, though am probably going to update this machine (the one with issues) to XP professional (for several reasons, and because many businesses/consumers use it now, so I should be more familiar with it.)
I should mention that through several steps to try to get it to work, I have it working under 800x600 16-bit color... but this is NOT acceptable for what my machine + video card are capable of, nor for what I use it for typically.
All other diagnosises still apply.
