Have you recently upgraded or REinstalled your operating system? Would your OS by any chance be WinMe or Win98 SE ???

Something quick to try. Do a search for the file normal.dot using the search option. Delete the file, empty the recycle bin and then restart word and see what happens. The normal.dot file will be re-created when word opens. It's just a quick and simple to try and won't cause any issues.

I'm pretty sure that this is your fix - if the above didn't work . . .

Go to START > PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES, and then click on WINDOWS EXPLORER.

From there, ON THE LEFT SIDE, open up your computer icon - followed by clicking on the "C" drive - then clicking on WINDOWS - and finally, this time on the RIGHT side, look for the SYSEDIT file. Click on it, to open it up.

You should be looking at several open "DOS like" windows on your screen. One of them should be named: windows\system.ini
Click on that particular window so that everything within it becomes visible.

Now look for, and find the [BOOT] section by scrolling down. In that section, there should be a line that reads:
drivers=mmsystem.dll
(exactly like that - no spaces)

If that line is there - read the bottom of this post. If that line is not there - insert it manually on your own.

Go to FILE and SAVE the change . . .
Then close the program - close Windows
Explorer - and restart your machine.

If the problem is still there, and if you've had this problem for LESS than 4 days, let me know immediately because there's one more "sure thing" that we can do. Good luck, and post back.

Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Sorry . . .
Brain isn't screwed on tightly today.

Just got to START, then RUN, and type into that little window: system.ini
[ENTER]

Then follow the rest of the directions from above. That should be easier.

I installed the latest 7.0 Netscape--and, for some unexplainable reason, following the installation, Word documents wouldn't open--the message was that it couldn't find Winword. Going through all the hoops of trying to find Winword failed; it wasn't anywhere to be found.

Then, I arrived at this wonderful forum. First, I followed the earlier suggestion of inserting in the [BOOT] section the missing

drivers=mmsystem.dll

followed by restarting the computer.

This still didn't correct the problem. Then, I went to "find" from the start menu and typed in

normal.dot

Once it appeared, instead of deleting it as suggested above, I double-clicked it and saved it. Then I restarted the computer, and . . .

Voila!!!

My Word documents opened as before.

Hope this helps someone else. Thanks to all above for helping me; had I known about this spot, I wouldn't have spent two hours trying to reconfigure everything!!!

Best wishes to all,
JoyceMarie

KTTD, you are a lifesaver!
I spent a whole day copying and transferring winword.exe from my program CDs,uninstalling and reinstalling Word, uninstalling and reinstalling Works, and nothing worked. I was going to uninstall and reinstall Windows (and all my apps), but shuddered with dread. Then I found this MARVELLOUS SITE and with joy I read John Molloy's problem - the same as mine, and your answer, so neat and quick. winword.exe has no fears for me any more, thanks to you and the other techos on this site!
Thank you

Ian Turnbull

Hey KTTD, I also bless you! I was having the same problem with Word and I wanted to reinstall the program but my CD-Rom drive is also not working well. In desperation I entered "winword.exe" into Google and came up with this message string. It also worked for me! A simple solution to what looked like a big problem.

Thanks!

hi can you help?
i followed these instructions "From there, ON THE LEFT SIDE, open up your computer icon - followed by clicking on the "C" drive - then clicking on WINDOWS - and finally, this time on the RIGHT side, look for the SYSEDIT file. Click on it, to open it up."
When i opened the program i noticed that i didnt have the SYSEDIT file. Could this be the reason word causes an error everytime i try to open it? If so how can i get the program?
