Specs: Macintosh
I have a 500GB simpletech external hard drive that has suddenly and mysteriously become read only and I cannot save onto it. How can it be unlocked?

Were you using it on a Windows system & then switched over to Mac? How is the drive formatted? I'm not a MAC users but AFAIK, Macs can read/write to FAT32 but not NTFS.

Yes. I used it on a PC originally and have now switched to a Mac. That seems to be the origin of the problem. I can access everything on disk but a message of 'read only' comes on when I try to save docs now

If it's formatted as NTFS, you're going to have to convert to FAT32. To do that, you'll have to temporarily copy all your files off the external, reformat as FAT32, then copy them back.

I did find the following program that may be a workaround, but like I said, I'm not a MAC user.

Presuming you are running Apple OS X O/S, you left out the info.. Macintosh is a range of Apple products..
