Windows XP volume control icon disappeared

November 17, 2011 at 01:39:27
Specs: Windows XP
When I go into control panel and click on "Sounds and audio devices" and then on "Place volume control on the task bar", the request is rejected because "the Volume Control program is not installed". When I go into "Add and remove programs in Control panel as instructed, I cannot find any reference to a Volume Control program. What next?

Make, Model, age of PC? Sounds like your sound card/device is on the fritz...

Try reloading the sound driver.

on-board or sound card? Have you tried a reboot? Sometimes you can get lucky and it will reinstall on boot.

If builders built buildings like programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilization.

Thanks for your help so far. However, the only sound device Belarc Adviser can find on my system is described as "SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio". Is this the correct software for my volume control icon being missing?

I went to the SoundMAX site and downloaded new software and installed it. No difference. I still have no volume control icon in my Taskbar..When I go into Device Manager, it tells me the SoundMAX is working perfectly but when I c lick on "Place the volume icon on the Taskbar" in the "sounds and Audio properties" in the Volume tab in "sounds and audio devices from Control panel, it still tells me it can't do so because "the volume control sopftware has not been installed" so go to "add and remove programs" in the control panel and do so.

I've now been asked to reinstall a file "Sndvol32.exe" because that is also missing. I have searched through Control Panel but there is no such program. I'm going around in circles.

HELP!

Thanks for that but unfortunately I don't appear to have the original driver Cd for the motherboard. I don't think I ever had one. Is there a file name I can search on the internet. I have all the serial numbers and BIOS details for the motherboard. Can I use this info to search the internet for a driver? I found and reinstalled :sndvol32.exe with no volume icon showing after rebooting.

Thanks
