A friend said that it would be better to use a thumb drive for a page file for Windows XP. His reason sounded logical. He said that accessing a hard drive as opposed to a memory chip, that it would be no contest. Do you think that a 2 Gig thumb drive would suffice for this purpose. Prices are down for thses drives and it beats opening up your computer to put in more memory...if you have slots available. What do you guys think?

I think the page file is established and in use long before the user mode drivers are loaded.

Besides that the drive should be running in DMA or better is SATA. USB needs to go through the bus and is going to be much slower. Remember the hdrive has read ahead cache too.

Well, the idea itself has merit; see Vista's ReadyBoost.

If you are an average user with 2 gbs of memory, I wouldn't worry about the page file. Your system probably is using the page file very little.
