I am trying to upgrade my compaq presario 7ap-134 from ME to XP home. I fdisked and formatted the hard drive. After this when i tried to install XP it give me an error.

setupdd.sys could not be loaded / error code is 4.
Microsoft lists this as a hardware compatability issue.
I removed all Add-in cards and booted with just Vid card, Ram, processor, HDD. Same problem. This was the same hardware that came with the computer, i contacted hp/compaq and was told there were no known compatability issues. I have checked the Power supply and case fans, everything seems very operational. I ran the HDD test provided by manufacterer, everything was fine. Not sure of where to go after here. I'm going to test the memory next. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Try a different CD-ROM and search this forum for a lot of other suggestions.

You didn't state your CPU and RAM. They might not meet XP's minimum requirements.

Sorry, the CPU is an athlon 1.1, i think. And i know that i've got at least 384mb RAM inside. I've already tried a different cd-rom. What else can i do?

Change the boot order in BIOS and boot from CD, it will then allow you to reformat in NTFS and should install flawlessly.
