windows xp corrupted external drive

Specs: Windows XP, 3G
I have a Compaq Presario v6700 with Windows XP. I use and external drive in a sleeve to perform backups. I stopped using this drive as my backup drive for about a year but now went back and my laptop won't recognize it. In fact, it freezes up my computer as soon as I attach it to the USB slots. I'm not sure what is wrong but was thinking on reformatting the drive if I could get my laptop to recognize it. This was a fairly new drive (3-4 months of use) and was stored in a safe place where it couldn't get damaged. I believe the drive is in good working order but the programming on it is corrupted. What do I do?

Does the drive use an AC adapter? If not, are you connecting TWO USB cables to the drive?
