My hard disk crashed so i bought another new one hook it up and installed windows xp, now i have connected my other HDD as slave and windows recognized it but the problem is that each time i try to access the salve drive it says drive is not formatted it needs format. I went to disk management and found that it is a basic drive and it asks me to convert to dynamic drive, is this correct way to fix it ? it used to work before and it has data that i do not want to lose

It probably has a corrupt "table of contents" which the result of or the reason for the "crash" that occurred.

To try to recover data from it, don't do anything more to it other than to try disc recovery software. If the data on it was valuable, remove the HDD and send it to a pro data recovery service.
