When turning on computer it just gets to the win me logo screen and won't go any further. Before that it would start up but then suddenly freeze and restart. I haven't had a chance to have a look to see if the fans are running since it's a friends computer but I want to make sure. I know all the possible problems before I got look at it. I am thinking possibly HDD, cpu fan. The computer is a 4 year old gateway think is an amd athlon 900mhz. What do you guys think.

I think you should check out the obvious first of course, just like you mentioned. But alot of times newly added software or hardware drivers can do this. I would first try to go in under safe mode and do a System Restore. That may cure the whole problem for you and then try to find out what was recently added that caused it to play up. Start/Programs/Accessories/System tools/System Restore. If that doesn't do it then I would start eliminating hardware piece by piece. Start with RAM and CD drives, and move on from there.
