Windows system 32 missing or corrup

Specs: Windows XP
When I turn on my computer the following message is displayed on black screen and will not go off
:Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

What can I do - I don't have the setup cd rom?

You can borrow anyone elses to fix it.

You might be able to use a live cd such as linux or barts or Vista DVD to fix it.

By "setup CD rom" do you mean the OS CD? What happened immediately preceding this problem? Can you boot to Safe Mode?

What manufacturer/model is the computer?
