I am having a problem when windows starts up. The windows screen will pop up then it act's like it is going to open the desk top but nothing comes up on the screen just a teal blue screen. The mouse works and I am able to move it around but the screen is blank. I hit ctrl+alt+del to open program manager and the only thing running is the virus scan program. Then and Illegal operations window pops up and it says that Explorer is shutting down. Click on the close and it goes but to the same teal screen. I need some help. I don't what to reformat because it has some file on it that I need.

You can try to install Windows over it's self. (Without formatting.) This can be done from Windows or from DOS. I like to do it from DOS like I was doing a clean install with out formatting.

Doing that will replace what ever's missing without removing the things you want to keep.
I've done this many times with good success.

what version of Windows are u running? u mention Program Manager, which is used more often in Win3.x...but under the subjest ur OS is Win98?

assuming that u have encountered this problem while running Win98, my suggestion is as follows:

reeboot ur system...keep ur finger pressed down on the CTRL button while it loads...this will bring up a DOS menue...Choose the Safe Mode option & press Enter...This will start Windows with a minimal amount of drivers loaded...if Windows loads with no errors, run Scandisk to check ur HDD...then run Defrag...after u have done this, reebot ur system & see if Windows will load "normal"...if u still get the same error that u reported above then u may have to reinstall Windows...

HTH...
