I am working on an hp brio celeron 400mhz. The harddrive on this computer went bad and I just received a replacement. For some reason while windows xp is in setup it freezes at 17% all the time. It stops at copying driver cab. It's a maxtor 30gig 7200 rpm. exact same drive that was in there before.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Are you sure that it is freezing. The Data Cab file is very large and it takes a while to copy it. I would imagine that a slow processor would make it worse. Try letting it set a while and see if it finally moves on to other files.

okay I will try that. When it stops at the driver.cab I noticed that the cd rom light stops as well.

99% of my bad installs and freezes were attributed to bad CDROMs. They appear to work just fine but when you load XP they just get nutty. Swapped out CDROM and off I went.

Okay I have waiting about 5 minutes now and it's still stuck on 17%. Don't know what else to do. I have never experienced something like this before. I checked all the jumper settings and everything seems fine.

I swapped the cd-rom drives twice. I also went ahead and put the windows 98 recovery cd this pc came with. It reinstalled windows 98 without a problem but when it goes to boot for the first time. It just keeps restarting will only run in safe mode. I ran an hp diagnostic test and all hardware passed.

This motherboard doesn't have a coin battery.I was looking for it earlier but when you suggested it I took a closer look and there is none. I also try setting bios to default and still nothing. First time I have experienced anything like this it is so fraustrating. I packed it in for the night but please if anyone knows anything about this type of problem any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Wow, I thought even HP PCs used coin batterys with something as "new" as a Celeron but I don't doubt you.
I would still try another CDROM or two (different brands) if it's not too much trouble.
Are you sure the old HD died and not the power supply or motherboard?

Yeah. I tried to format and reinstall the old one it wouldn't even do that. I even put it on my PC and it was a no go either. I ran a test with maxtor to determine that the hard drive was gone so they sent me the replacement. I thought i was going to pack it in for the night but this is really bugging me. I am on my third rom and still nothing. I even took out all pci cards and changed the ide cable.

If it stops at exactly the same place I'd suspect the XP disk - must be getting into a loop trying to copy a particular file. Can you borrow another XP disk just to try?

Although i've never tried this with XP and i have only done it with win98, what do you think about copying the files into a directory on the hard drive via DOS command prompt? Not sure if you can do it with XP but i wouldn't see why not. Waiting for your reply.

I didn't have the exact same problem as yours, but XP Home stalled when I was trying to load it on a PC I had built. After I cleaned the XP CD off with some Windex and a soft cloth, the install finished just fine! Sounds nutty, I know, and I certainly couldn't guarantee that it would make any difference in your situation. However, as a computer tech, I work for a company that ships out CDs/DVDs to customers, and we sometimes have them clean their disks when the software won't install or run. It's worth a try.

I had a similar problem with an install a while back. Stalled at exactly the same spot each time. I did try different install CDs with the same result. The problem turned out to be hardware. The capacitors on the motherboard were bulging and I had to replace the motherboard.

Thanks everyone. I have tried cleaning the cd and I have tried two different win xp pro setup cds. I have also tried two windows 98 disc. The recovery cd that came with it installs fine but won't boot normal only in safe mode. I am starting to think it is a hardware problem. I ran the hp diagnostic test and memory, processor everything passed but I guess it could be wrong. I am giving it one last shot today. I have one brand new drive I haven't tried

Try booting with win 98 startup floppy. On the "A" prompt type fdisk & with fdisk facility remove partitions . Then set boot order to cd rom & reboot and try to install Xp.

I finally found the problem causing my install to stop at 17% at driver.cab. It was a memory stick that went bad. I pulled it out and everything installed perfectly.
