Well I'm afraid you won't be able to extract any data from it unless you get it to work again. Even data recovery software requires that the drive is in working order and recognised by Windows.
You really should have your precious photos & other files saved in at least two separate locations, not just on one drive.
If you discover that the drive still doesn't work, test it with Western Digital's diagnostic software for Windows: http://support.wdc.com/product/down...
It will test any WD Passport drive, so just ignore the Passport Essential picture if yours is a different model - it doesn't matter.
If the drive has failed (as revealed by the testing software) the only way to get data off it is to send it to a professional data recovery service, and that is very expensive.
