I have a P-III computer having Win-98 installed. I am facing a very peculiar problem during start up of my PC.

Firstly, when I started my PC, it showed

“ Keyboard error or no keyboard found”

The keyboard stopped working and I could not proceed further from this error screen.

I thought that my keyboard has stopped functioning. So I bought a new keyboard and replace the old with this new Samsung Keyboard.

Now when I started my PC after attaching the new keyboard, the PC recognized the keyboard and started booting normally. However, when (after the other regular screens appearance) the desktop appears, I got this message:

“ No mouse is detected by windows. You can install one serial (or parallel I don’t know exactly) mouse port now after switching the computer off.”

[I have not used the exact language of the message as I can’t recall it ]

Now, my mouse is not responding. I thought that after the keyboard, my mouse has also stopped functioning. Before, buying a new mouse , I tried this faulty mouse on another PC at my office. To my surprise, this (presumably) faulty mouse is working on other PCs.

Now I am confused. First keyboard went wrong, then it’s mouse. But since mouse is working on other PCs, I suspect that my older keyboard would also work perfectly on other PCs and the real cause of this problem is something different.

Can anybody tell me why my PC is behaving so strangely? I am unable to work on it as the mouse is not working on it.

Please help.

Go into your BIOS set up and see if all your communications ports are turned on, the keyboard port is set active, and if you have the PNP set for OK.

Without a mouse, you need to somehow go to device manager and see if there are any conflicts there too.

Something to try is a small program called Mouse Emulator, it uses certain keyboard keys to navigate, and for the left/right click functions. It is free, and is found here http://www.nonags.com/nonags/miscu.html it is a little over halfway down the page. I personally have not tried the program, so have no real knowledge, but when push comes to shove, sometimes you have to try everything.

You will have to go to the Device manager and try removing the mouse. The keyboard can be used to do this, but it will take some time to learn.

Well thanks for your suggestion ! I'll try them . By the way, yesterday I invited one of my techie friend and he suggeted me this

" your mouse is a ps2 port mouse (i.e. the parallel port mouse). Since it is not working try to attach a serial mouse in the serial port and see if the PC detect this mouse. "

I tried this by attaching a serial mouse in the PC. And windows has detected it. This serial mouse is working. Can anybody tell me whether this is a sign that my ps2 port for mouse is defective and I should replace it ? or is it something different problem ?

Thanks to all of you for nice support !

I think I had the same problem ...i also have a P3 computer..my mouse also stopped working,i did everything ..i even re-installed my OS and reformatted my hard disk ..everything is ok except the mouse..it was so frustrating coz it just sits there in the middle of my screen,i mean i am able to change its appearance but i can't get it to move..i even bought a new mouse but that didnt work either.finally my techie friend also suggested that i attach my mouse to a different port so i used my USB port and to so it finally worked!..so i guess my PS2 port doesn't work and they said that i'm better off buying a new motherboard that getting it fixed coz it is solded on to the motherboard.hope this helps a bit.
