Window XP will not boot

Specs: windows xp sp2, Pent 2.2 Duo Core, 4
My computer freezes when it gets to Verifying DMI Pool....
Also when it boots up many times it will shut off and then turn on again maybe a couple of times before it continues to boot. My BIOS Computer health shows that the MB nor the CPU are overheating? The problem with starting and turning off has been happening for a few months. Windows has been acting up so I thought it might be a Virus. I attempted to install ESET Windows Security which includes an anti-virus and firewall etc. But that install did not complete. So I went into the Registry in an attempt to delete all instances of ESET with not good results. I have probably screwed up my registry.

1. What do you think may be causing the start stop problem?
2, Is there a way to recover my registry from perhaps a month ago?

I have Registry Mechanic from PC Tools installed and run it occasionally to clean out cookies and temp files and whatever else it is supposed to do.

Also I am writing this from my daughter's computer.
I am running XPPro SP3 on my computer with a Pent 4 2.2 Duo Core and 4 Gigs of Ram

Thanks for helping me to solve this problem.

There's very little need to pay for software anymore, except for the OS (had to throw that in there). There are plenty of free anti-virus, firewall, reg cleaners, etc available...don't waste your money on commercial software. Have a look here:

http://www.filehippo.com/

I suggest AVG Free or AVAST antivirus, CCleaner for clearing out intenet garbage/temp files/registry, Sunbelt Personal Firewall.

You obviously looked at the system & CPU temps, why didn't you list them?

"Verifying DMI Pool...." has nothing to do with Windows. It's occuring before Windows even loads so the problem is most likely a BIOS issue or a problem with your hardware.

Thanks Jam,
I will go to http://www.filehippo.com/

I am using AVAST antivirus and update it daily.
The system & CPU temps are in the 32 degree Celcius range

"Verifying DMI Pool...." has nothing to do with Windows. It's occuring before Windows even loads so the problem is most likely a BIOS issue or a problem with your hardware.

I was thinking that it might be the power supply, but I thought maybe with symptoms listed above that someone might give me more to investigate. I have had the computer turned off for over an hour so I will go in and see if I can run SFC /Scannow.
Question: Do I run SFC from the Command Prompt if I can get the computer to stay running, or would you do this from the Windows XP Install CD, when it asks if you want to repair in the Consul or install? Thanks again for your support.

I think I have hardware problems, I can not get past the "Verifying the DMI Pool" before Windows opens.
Given the above symptoms, what would you fellows suggest?
Thanks for your help... srloren
