This computor was working fine in the past but started locking up alot so I decided to reinstall the O.S. I hav tried 4- 5 variations of Format ,(Format C: ,

Reply: (edit)Two main components in any PC are always going to be at risk of having failures. The HD and the RAM. I know that I have a few bits in one of my RAM sticks that are playing up. The program freezings and odd behaviour pointed me to this because it was not one program but any program at random, and whichever program crashed on me, was working in the dodgy RAM area. I ran MEMTEST86, and it confirmed my suspicions. For the HD to lock at the same point everytime could be a bad drive, or indeed it could be RAM. To eliminate the RAM, get hold of MEMTEST86, and let it test the RAM. For the HD, beg, borrow or steal another one. You might also try FIXMBR on your HD to reset the boot sector. Formatting does not do this. Use a boot up floppy disk to effect this. Of course these two items are not the only things that can go wrong, but I am basing my prognosis on what you have reported. Locking up on the LOGO makes me believe that WIN98 installed, but is having trouble working in RAM. or through a bad sector on HD. Safe Computing...:o)

Reply: (edit)i did a little research on the at other forums one in germany from what i could gather said that windows did not fully load onto the disk another said: Main memory defectively or not correctly put in slots here's another: Standard Mode Messages If you get any of the following error messages, remove any memory managers (such as EMM386.exe, QEMM, or 386Max) from your Config.sys file, and then run Setup again. Standard Mode: Invalid DPMI return. Standard Mode: Fault in MS-DOS Extender. Standard Mode: Bad Fault in MS-DOS Extender. Standard Mode: Unknown stack in fault dispatcher. Standard Mode: Stack Overflow. NOTE: If you still have problems, add EMM386.EXE back into your Config.sys file and exclude all ranges. For example, device=c:\windows\emm386.exe x=A000-FFFF If you encounter these messages or if your computer stops responding during Setup, turn on double-buffering in SmartDrive. Several SCSI hard drives and some ESDI drives require double-buffering. To turn on double buffering, add the following line to the beginning of your Config.sys file: device=c:\windows\smartdrv.exe /double_buffer+ where "c:\windows" is the path to your Windows directory. the web site for the last one is: http://www.pcnetcom.net/win_98.htm

Reply: (edit)I really appreciate all the help but I 'm not getting you to understand my situation. I have tried 2 differant HD's 2 sets of memory and run fdisk& format many times and in many veriations (format C: C:/s C:/u /s etc.) WIN 98 2ed will not install, it wont get past checking files to run setup and freezes, I've tried running setup from the cd rom & I installed the complete disk on the HD in a C:\win98 dir and ran setup from the C:. Either way I get the same results. When I start setup it starts as normal to the point as soon as it starts check system files to run setup it freezes, one time it went to the first win98 splash screen. Thats where I'm at.
