Subject: Win XP Pro Can't Shut DownOS: Win XP Pro / SP1CPU/Ram: Pentium 4 3.6 GHz / 1 GB |
Comment: I have read extensively on the issue of when trying to to shut Window down, the system restarts. I ONLY have Win XP Pro SP1 installed (clean), no additional software and no additional drivers. I have gone into Device Manager and in the Advanced Setting I unchecked the Restart box when System Failure. Still the PC will restart. What can it be? Power supply = 450W.

Reply: (edit)Try enabling APM in Power Management. Also, see that it is enabled in BIOS too. I have heard that sometimes the opposit works too. If the above does not fix it, try disabling APM in both places.

Reply: (edit)The APM tab in Power Management does not exist. This tab appears (from my experience) in older PC's like AT type motherboards. The BIOS unfortunately does not have any APM or ACPI settings to play with. So I'm a bit stumped at the moment. Motherboard looks clean; it's brand new.

Reply: (edit)Do you have an option in the BIOS for PnP o/s? If so, make sure it is enabled. Is Power Management enabled in the BIOS? If so, the options for ACPI + APM should be somewhere. What does the mobo manual say?
