OS: Win XP sp2
CPU/Ram: 1 gb
Product: custom built
Comment:

l have the Win XP disk sp1, but my computer has been updated to sp2. l must has inadvertently deleted some files, as booting up is slow, and the programes that usually boot don't work and comes up with errors, i.e, Lotus Suite comes up with an error -
"System error:(ASWAN:1722)The RPC Server is unavailable"
When l try to use my Windows XP home Disk to repair my computer, the operating files, it says that the "files (on the disk) are older than the one on the hard drive" and will not continue with the repair. How can l get around this, l hope that this can be repaired and not have to do a total reinstall, as l did'nt have a chance to back up my files.

Have you slipstreamed your SP1 CD with XP SP2?

Lots of things can cause your computer to run more slowly. Have you checked your computer for the presence of malware?

If you actually deleted files you need, using System Restore to revert to an earlier Registry won't help, but you could try that.

You could try enabling Boot Logging in the Safe Mode menu, which when used by itself will show you what does not load in a normal mode, to see if you can find if there is something that is supposed to load that isn't loading, and get some clues from that.
That adds entries to a file ntbtlog.txt in C:\Windows.
Open it, go to the end of the file, then scroll back up until you see Microsoft Windows Version 5.1..........today's date and the time you last booted - that is the start of your current boot log.
There are usually some things that are not loaded in any configuration, depending on what your system has or needs, that you don't need to be concerned about.
E.g. these do not load in my system, yet it works fine.
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
(I don't need a proxy)
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\lbrtfdc.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Sfloppy.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\i2omgmt.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Changer.SYS
(I don't have a CD changer)
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\Cdaudio.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\PCIDump.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\ousbehci.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\afd.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\rdbss.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\mrxsmb.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\bsaspi32.SYS
.....

If you are getting specific error messagaes about programs that weren't included on the Windows CD, investigate what that error means on the web - or Un-install, re-install the programs.
...

Whatever method you were using to try to repair Windows using the orginal CD, it sounds like it wasn't the XP Repair Setup method.

An XP Repair Setup will not harm your existing Windows installation, but it can only fix things Windows detects as wrong, and/or replace corrupted or missing Windows files that are on your original XP CD. If running it doesn't cure enough of your problems and/or the problems are caused by things not on the original Windows CD, you may have to make a clean install of Windows from scratch.
You will need a Windows CD of the same version as the one of your Windows installation, and the Product Key, preferably the one that was used to install it, but it can be one for the same version as the one of your Windows installation.

how to do an XP Repair Setup, step by step:

If your Windows CD did not have SP1 or SP2 included, and you updated to SP1 or SP2, you will have to install that again to get SP1 or SP2 working properly again.
