Hi,
I'm trying to install a CD-RW drive, in place of the original 32X CD-ROM drive which is connected via 50 pin SCSI adaptor.
1. Can I get a SCSI CD-RW drive or do I have to buy an IDE CD-RW drive and go for an IDE adaptor?
2. Which is cost effective and makes more sense? I bought my IBM Aptiva AMD-K6 in 1998. I have upgraded RAM to 256MB. I feel a CD-RW drive will bring it to top shape.

Please advise....Thanks
Ram

Yes, there are SCSI CD-RW drives. Your system probably already includes an IDE controller. Check device manager and/or your system manual to see if an IDE controller is listed. IDE is far more economical, even if you have to buy a separate IDE controller. In the U.S. separate IDE controllers start at about $20, IDE CD-RW drives start at about $40. Some CD-RW drives can ocasionally be found for as little as $20 after rebates. SCSI CD-RW drives start at about $110.

Thanks for your response. I bought an IDE CD-RW drive but unfortunately my system does not list an IDE Controller.(By IDE Controller do you mean the card to which the ribbon cable from the drive is connected?). My old SCSI CD-ROM drive was connected to SCSI card. I tried connecting the new CD-RW drive to the second IDE adaptor on the motherboard, but system would'nt boot. I have to buy an IDE adaptor card(controller) correct? Thank you very much.

The motherboard's BIOS should tell you if you actually have an eide controller on the motherboard. Probably do have, but, it is disabled (turned off in BIOS).
