Will not show slave drive

Hewlett-packard / Pavillion 554e
August 20, 2009 at 13:55:54
Specs: Windows XP
I have installed a 2nd HD as a slave to the master HD. There is no OS on the HD but it has been formatted. When I turned on the computer the "found new hardware" box appeared. The drive is shown in the device manager, but it does not appear in My Computer. I have the jumper in the right place. The slave wires and master wires are connected correctly and the power wires are connected correctly.
Is there something I need to do to be able to see the drive in My Computer and save files to the slave drive? Or have I done something wrong?

Look for the second drive in Disk Management. You may need to assign a drive letter to it. If both hard drives are on the same cable describe how you have them jumpered.

It is listed as disk 1 on computer management and shows as unallocated. I am pretty sure it was formatted prior to installation. I tried to reformat in disk management but it gave no option to do that when I would right click on the drive. In the upper right screen of disk management is shown the c: and d:(recovery). Disk 1 is only shown in the lower left section. (If that means anything)

The slave jumper is on the 2nd set of pins as indicated on the HDD itself.

How would I assign a drive letter??

You need to partition the drive first. Then you can format.
