Subject: Will not load windowsOS: xpCPU/Ram: 64 2800/ 256 |
Comment: I just got a barebones kit for christmas and was putting my old hard drive, ram, and other cards in it and tried to boot and it just keeps looping to the page that says: Windows did not load sucessjully on a previous attempt Please select the option to do. I have tried all the options and it does the same thing. The motherboard is an Asus K8V-X, processor is an Athlon 62 2800 with AMD heatsink and fan. Currently I am using 256 Pc 2700 ram, My new ram will be in around tuesday. Could the hard drive have gone bad or something? Thanks in advance!

Reply: (edit)Did your Windows come pre-installed with restore disks? If so, that installation isn't eligable for an ungrade. Is your old computer a Dell, Gateway, Etc.?

Reply: (edit)No, the computer was built by my uncle but when I got the barebones kit I took the needed parts out and put them in the new kit. The Hard drive was windows 98se but I purchased an upgrade and performed the upgrade before Christmas. And if i do have to format the hard drive how would i get to the command prompt and what would I do from there? I have a few windows 95 Cd's that have not been opened so I could use them.

Reply: (edit)You should be able to just do a new XP installation without formating the harddrive. Just boot from the XP CD and a message appears to press a key to boot from CD or something like that. Install over the existing installation and XP should replace the old hardware against the new but keep the original installation. But I give no warranty on that because I never tried that with XP. But it worked with all older Windows versions I knew (95, 95C, 98, 98SE, ME)!

Reply: (edit)I don't think Win95 is a qualified upgrade. Do you have a Win98 setup or install disk? All you need to use a upgrade version of windows is proof of a prior qualified version of windows. When The XP CD asks for that you simply pop in the floppy or CD in and that should work. Someone else can probably help you with the WinXP issues. I know you can uninstall the full versions and install them on a different computer. Maybe you can do the same with the upgrade version. I would check the windows site for info on this. I assume this upgrade installation was registered?
