More RAM is one of the more effective ways of improving performance. It's difficult to be precise, as people's usage varies, but I would say that 448 MB is a bit tight for XP. Upgrading to 1 or 2 GB will cost very little (about 30 US Dollars) so I would say that it would be a good investment.

yes i agree with ijack. Also adding a cheap v-card will help improve system perfomance. For better multi tasking u need atleast dual core CPU.

Agreed, XP does run much better on 1GB or more, especially with browsers after IE6. Also keeping it cleaned out will help (clean out browser, disk clean up, and defrag).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi Conor,

Install the maximum memory *AND* type, that the maker's manual advises.

I would be surprised if this does not give a considerable improvement in speed.

You advise you have 448mb of ram. This seems little, suggesting it is an old (pentium?) pc. Would think it is more likely you have 640mb. Use control panel to check this.

Memory (particularly old) can be found on ebay at inexpensive prices.

Please advise back on what you decide. As a matter of interest, where are you located? I am in Hammersmith, West London.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
