Will it work in my computer

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 with an 80 gig, ATA, C: drive. I have a LaCie external hard drive with a 250 gig PATA drive. All of a sudden the external drive quit working. In trying to do some troubleshooting, I removed the PATA drive from the external case and plugged it into my second hard drive cable in the computer. The computer would not even turn on. I changed the pin setting but the computer still would not boot. I removed the PATA drive and the computer booted fine. I only tried two of the pin settings available so maybe one of the others will work but I'm not sure if this drive was even manufactured to be used as a stand-a-lone hard drive since there is a small board inside the external case the PATA drive connects to. And, perhaps the drive has just flat "bit the dust". I hate losing all of the files on that drive but I may be totally out of luck.

Make sure you have the drive jumper-ed appropriately.
Most systems have two IDE controllers, each of which can handle two devices. A Master and a Slave. Put this second drive on a cable by itself and set the jumper to Master or CS.

If the system will not power up at all with that second drive connected then it seems likely it's toast. Try this. Connect only a power cable to the second drive. Leave the IDE cable unplugged. Will the system start up?
