Will a 20/4pin work on 24/4 board?

Specs: Windows 7, AMD Phenom 4/8gig
I am looking to upgrade my Power Supply Unit from 350w to 600w to support graphics card (NvidiaGTS450) for video editing.

Will the 20/4 pin connectors on the 600w be compatible with an ASUS M2N78-LA (Viola) MB with 24/4 socket? I read into it some but find confusion with some of the replies. Thanks

Here is a website that gives a good description of the various PSU connectors. For your m/b you need a 24-pin ATX connector and a 4-pin power cable for the CPU. Any modern PSU should have these.

Whilst on the subject, make sure that you get a good brand PSU (Antec, Corsair, CoolerMaster come to mind - there are others, so it's worth Googling to see what people recommend). This will cost you a little more than a no-name cheapo unit, but it is a wise investment.

Thanks ijack, but I fail to see the website you suggest. I do the same thing now and then, lol. Thanks for your advice. I have been through the cheap parts thing before. I only use top quailty to replace things these days. I realize the motherboards needs. I am just a little confused on the way things get worded. More times than not it is a different path to the same destination.

If you are buying a currently sold 600W PSU I would think it has the additional 4 pin power connector. Where you are getting confused is with the 20+4 power connector. That refers to a main power connector that can be used on boards that only require the 20 pin OR on boards that require the 24 pin connector. Modern PSUs may still come with the 20+4 connector AND should have the additional CPU power connector which may a be 4 or 8 pin splittable connector.

Sorry for my eyesight see's that as more black than blue, OtheHill. I found a 650W PSU that has the 24/4 connection that will workalong with a card for a decent price. However i am not familiar with the brands. I would appreciate any insight you may have.

Bonzoid, your link is not working.

Are you upgrading your Graphics card? If so, post the model of the card. We can then suggest a good PSU to buy. Wattage rating, by themselves are not a good indicator.

Graphics cards pull primarily from the 12V rail/s on the PSU. So the 12V amperage available from the PSU must exceed the demands.

Below is a link to a site that many regulars here use. Corsair PSUs are top quality. The PSU linked my be more than you need, depending on the graphics card you select.

If I read this right your going from a 350 to a 600 but need a 24 pin not a 20.

You can get a 20 to a 24 pin adapter on Ebay for just a few bucks

The main ATX connector on the motherboard either requires a 20-pin plug or a 24-pin plug, it depends on the age of the board. The 20-pin plug was used on older ATX systems. Newer systems (ATX12V) require the 24-pin plug. Some power supplies have a 20+4 main ATX plug, this allows it to be used for either 20-pin ATX or 24-pin ATX12V systems. There is also a separate 4-pin plug (generally called ATX12V or P4 plug) that needs to be connected to the board to power the processor.

An ATX power supply with a 20-pin plug *may* be able to be used on an ATX12V board, provided a PCI-e video card is NOT installed. Here's a pic:

The link below shows the power requirements of that series. Divide those numbers by 12 to get the Amperage draw on the 12V rail.


Here is the rated amps for the unit you listed: +12V 1: 48 A
Here is the rated amps for the Corsair I listed: +12V@52A

Both appear to be OK but the Ultra is showing more 5V than you will use. Corsair has been voted #1 a couple of times.

The Corsair I linked has a 20+4 main power connector. IMO it is a better unit.
