Specs: Windows Vista
Hello, I have a Huawei USB dongle. After plug the dongle into my laptop, i want to see which USB host controller use the dongle, so i open device manager to check.
But the dongle is showed in
Ports(COM&LPT)
Huawei mobile connect - 3g application interface (com9)
Huawei mobile connect - 3g pc ui interface (com10)

My question is, why the dongle is showed in COM PORT? as i know, usb dongle does not need com...

Does it work otherwise? If so don't worry about it.
Just the way they did it would be my guess. It is a modem.

It is not uncommon for some USB devices to operate through a virtual comm port. Comm 9 and Comm 10 do not exist in hardware, only software. Using a virtual Comm port driver makes it a little easier for other software to interface with the USB device.

Thank you both!
The dongle works no problem, i am just curious why the usb dongle is in com ports... so it is designed as virtual com ports for easier use?

Besides showed as com ports in windows device manager, the dongle is also showed in USB controllers as
USB composite device
USB mass storage device
USB mass storage device

Do you know why it break up as 3 devices? I know the dongle may has flash drive inside so it can be seen as a storage device, but the computer already see it as a Composite device, so why still divide it as 3 devices?

And another thing, click Computer icon in my desktop, the dongle is recognized as a CD drive and a removable disk, and i can not open the removable disk, it pop up "please insert a disk to removable disk" after i click it.

No, not easier to use. Just the way they did it.

Sometimes you have to consider the way devices used to be working. Someone that created a driver or application may have used comm ports and it was just easier to make it all work with a new device and putting on a small change instead of re-writing it all.

The dongle showing up as a cd is just some bug. Don't play with it would be my guess also.
