Im still having the same problem, I installed a new hard drive and the computer says there is no fixed disk present. The jumpers are set correctly. I have tried auto and user in the bios, actually i have tried every setting the bios offers me with the same result each time. I have the ribbons plugged in correctly. I know the hard drive is good, because I tested it in another computer. Does the fact that its a gateway have something to do with this problem? Thank you.

Have you tried a different cable? Have you tried connecting to the other IDE channel? Are you connecting to the end of the cable? Is there an option in your BIOS to search for HD? It could have something to do with the MB BIOS. Why are you replacing the HD? In your original post you state that the HD was partially recognised. How many MBs did it indicate you had? If possible, re-connect the old HD and run AIDA32 for particulars of the MB. This will give the folks here some incite as to why this is happening and what can be done, if anything, to correct your problem. What we need is the chipset on the MB. That will indicate what size drive can be supported. What size drive did you remove?

Did you use the installation disk that came with the new drive? It will tell you if the mobo will support the drive. It will install bios overlay software if your system requires it for the drive to be recognized.

Ok...I removed a 6 gig and replaced it with a 40 gig. Yes I have tried swapping IDE channels my bad before this is not a gateway its an Amptron mobo with a P2 processor. The chipset says this... Via VX Two chipset. It will not let me run fdisk it wont let me get anywhere. Yes the bios has a auto detect, I have tried that to no avail. No software came with the hard drive. I bought it brand new and its a WD 40 gig.

For a new hard drive not detected:Enter the bios and choose the user defined hard drive with 1023 cy.,16 hds.,and 63 sect.,the others set to 0.Next choose LBA mode or IDE translation mode.Set to Normal,Standard CHS or LBA disabled. The size displayed will be 528 MB. Normal situation to allow booting.Use the install diskette that your manufacturer has for download on its site. The date limit to detect a big drive is June 1999 and after for sizes 32 GB and over.Good luck.

ok, I put the hard drive in my real computer to see what would happen, and no problem it recognized it and I even did a complete install of windows 98SE , so I take it out and put it back in this other computer and it tells me now hard disk fail. This is stupid, or is it me who is stupid?

Petit Jean's advice should have worked fine. If you want to make things simple, go to Western Digital Downloads and download the dos version for installation.

Run it from a floppy to install the drive.

As far as the floppy disk fail try flipping your ribbon cable around. Just pull it out and put it back in upside down. If the cable is keyed you won't be able to do that but if it's not it should work.
