why have all my mp3 files disappeared from the device?

Specs: Windows 7
I was charging my Hitachi (DMP X50N series) MP3 player and uploading one new song but now all my files have been erased. They are all showing on my laptop under MTP Player as usual but no files are found on actual device. I did reset it, but I usually have to after charging and this has never happened before. The only different thing that happened is that my device needed troubleshooting and the pc recommended a driver update and putting settings to automatic update which it wasnt set to before. My device is a good few years old so have I ruined it by doing this? And how do I recover the missing files, I'm hoping not to have to re-sync from media player as that would take alot of time. Ideally I would like to correct the mistake and hopefully all the files sat on the pc showing as being on the device would actually transfer back to the device. Thank you

Can't you simply connect your MP3 player to your laptop and copy the files across?

Hi. The mp3 was already connected, it won't let me copy across presumably because usually once the files are showing they would be on the mp3. I can (hopefully) resync from media player but that would take alot of time because I have whole albums saved on media player but dont up load all songs to the mp3. I would have to recreate a new sync list. I was hoping to find a quicker route.
