I would use the warranty to have it checked out immediately. From what you posted it does sound like a heat problem.

I second capt. he heat problem could be caused by blocked ventilation. Is it free of dust bunnies?

My HP 2 year old laptop starting doing the same thing. It does not power off, but the screen goes black and becomes non-responsive. It can happen inadvertently (just cruising internet, working on word doc, etc.) but will almost always happen when doing a winXP update, Spybot scan or virus scan. That later will happen if I just boot up and run the virus scan, even when the machines not "hot" or been on a long time.
After the screen goes black I have to do an auto powerdown and reboot, and it comes up just fine. May work another two hours or repeat black screen. If I was in a word or excel doc it will open the last saved version, but if I'm editing a movie or mp3 file all changes are lost.

not sure why it happens, but I'm losing faith in the machine.
