Why does my headphone jack stop working on my laptop

June 9, 2013 at 17:39:43
Specs: Windows 7
when I plug in my external speakers everything is working fine....after a power adjustment such as the battery running out of juice or like today when I put the laptop in Hibernation mode, the head phone speaker jack is not working....but always after a few hours of sending music to the head phones it always resets itself and works until the power is altered in some way

It doesn't sound like it's a problem with the wiring but just to make sure you might try another pair of headphones and see if they act the same.

Just a guess but is it possible windows is cutting power to that port? They're coming up with all kinds of ways to reduce power consumption in laptops. I know they do that already with USB ports. Since it's doing it during hibernation and when the battery is low maybe that's what's going on. Youi might be able to check that either in device manager or sound devices in control panel.

Thanks for that info. I have checked the headphone jack with other speakers and it seems that the jack is not getting any signal. BTW the speakers are working fine this morning after the laptop has internet access and I played a CD through the headphones for a few hours ( of course there was no sound at first but when I woke the computer up this morning from its sleep mode the sound to the headphones is back)
When I go to "Manage Audio Devices" and click on speakers it says that there is no Jack information....which seems odd

I'm not running windows 7 so I can't say for sure if it has the ability to shutdown that port or where to look if it does. It just seems odd it's happening during, and I guess, just after periods of minimal power usage. Instead of using the hibernation feature you might try just shutting it off and seeing if it's working better when you turn it back on.
