WOnder if anyone can shed some light on this issue. why does data corrupt? What is the best prevention? Does power quality matter? Does hard drive brand/type matter?

Here's a few reasons:
Power failures or incorrect user power down
Defective RAM
Defective hard drive
Improper user operations
Program defects

No HD maintenance (i.e., defrag)

Does hard drive brand/type matter?

Data corrupt is indifferent to the brand and type of HDs.

Not defragging should not cause data corruption. In fact it should not cause any problems other than a (probably unnoticeable) slow down of the system.
