Try a new mouse.

Sometimes if the mouse IRQ is shared with another device that can happen. Check in device manager. Click the 'view' tab and click 'resources by type' (that's the way it is on my XP; should be similar for vista). Sometimes you can manually change the settings there but it can be tricky.

Edit I assumed the mouse was PS/2. If it's USB try it in a different USB port. Or, if it is a PS/2 you might try a USB mouse and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah, definitely could be a bad port, or possibly interference if it is a wireless mouse.

If it is wireless and runs on batteries, try putting new batteries in it.

unfortunately, i changed usb ports, but still have the problem. it doesn't seem quite as bad, but, still happens. it happens more frequently when i am downloading pictures, but, will occasionally do it with text also.

it really doesn't hurt anything,i guess. it's just annoying as hell

Might be software related then. Check to see what software you have running in the background--especially anything monitoring hardware like a firewall. Maybe you have some energetic AV running. Temporarily disabling suspicious programs may point to what's causing it.
