It could be that the DVD laser has failed. CD/DVD drives use different laser diodes for each.

If this is a desktop it is probably a lot easier and less hustle to buy a new drive. They are cheap and easy to install.

If it is a laptop you will need to go to the manufacturer.

What software are you using & what are you trying to burn?

I have found the default Windows 7 method of creating a disk kind of confusing. You select to create a disk then select the content but then you must click on the BURN disk to actually make the disk. Perhaps you are not performing that last step. If you don't do that you will get a nag screen stating you have files waiting to be burned.

Easy way to check your optical drive is to boot to a bootable DVD. You can always abort any installation if it starts.

If it's a laptop (not given) and the unit turns out to have failed, another option is to buy an external CD/DVD drive player/burner.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

And it previously did burn DVDs? I ask because there are combo CD burners/DVD readers that sometimes cause confusion.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide. Better hurry. They're picking and shipping now.
