White lines Desktop only

Specs: Windows XP, 450/256
About 6 weeks ago I got a new pc and am using it with my old monitor ( about a year old). The pc has a Geforce 8100 graphics card.
A week ago suddenly whilst I was browsing the internet, the screen went black but only for about 2 seconds then returned to normal. It was all very quick and hasnt happened again since.
Three days ago I noticed a couple of white lines that are just visible on the start up screen ( blue start up screen) and on the desktop. When pcs been switched off for a while they are hardly noticable on start up but as soon as I have had the pc on for 20 mins or so it gets more and more noticable. They dont appear on the actual screen when its shut down but on at the mains. They dont appear on any web pages just the desktop. Tried changing resolution, refresh rate at 75. Monitor is plug and play and says analogue.
Have contacted the vendor from ebay where I bought the pc but havent heard back yet.
Any ideas what this is please and what I can do. They also appear on the start up to safe mode but dont appear on the black background of the screen in safe mode.

I have made sure I have the latest drivers from the nvidia site.

I am bumping this up as I am keen to get the problem solved.
I have..partly.
I swapped monitors and the swapped monitor is ok. The lines are still on the monitor plugged in our 2nd pc. Now I wonder if in time the same will happen to this other monitor or whether that first one was just 'on its way out'.
What puzzles me is that these lines are only on welcome screen and desktop...cant see them when opening anything else. Any help appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't mess with it. If the monitor you have plugged in now works, it's probably a defect in the new monitor. It should be under warranty and I would return it.

Thanks for the reply. Oddly enough the monitor with the lines has massivley improved ( barely visible) on the old 2nd pc we have.Curiouser and curiouser! Coudl it be the geforce 8100 that is 'affecting' monitors?
