I am hearing a high pitched whining noise coming from my monitor. It doesn't vary in pitch, but it doesn't sound exactly fixed, it sort of wanes here and there.. and sometimes sounds more muffled.
I am having PSU issues, as explained in another recent post, could this cause that?
The monitor does plug into the wall, ac outlet...so I question this as the cause.
I recently did a reformat. Could that have caused something? Refresh rate? It usually doesn't start making that noise after the monitor has been off for a while. In other words, once I turn it on, it will be fine for a short period of time, but then, either all of the sudden, or gradually, it starts in with this annoying noise. I am noticing no degradation in performance...that I can tell. My system seems to function properly.
And, the sound is definitely coming from the monitor... I don't have speakers hooked up, and it's not coming from inside my case.
Thanks so much.

Wow, great article XL!
Very interesting. I am an "audio whore" big time... so I enjoyed reading that.
Thanks again.

I'm having the same type of problem,
(continuous squealing sound), but, it's
being emitted by my Leadman Powmax 300W
power supply. The sound is only there
when my PC is on. The high-pitched sound
did make me worry that my power supply
would fail very shortly. I just purchased
the power supply in June, 2002.

randy could be a fan going bad....you can replace the power supply one with just a plain 80mm fan...

Generally, a whining sound from the power supply will be a fan, and probably one with sleeve bearings. They are well known for mit, and it will drive you nuts until it stops. Stops turning, that is. As for the monitor squeeling, this is usually caused by the electronics, specifically an oscillator that is used to raise the voltages up to a high level needed by the CRT. Technical stuff, yada yada. I used to service business systems and sometimes the operators would complain about the awfull screeching coming from their monitors. I guess I am blessed with limited hearing, cause I could seldom if ever hear it. I would just replace their monitor and take it somewhere else. If you can't hear it, there is no problem. You might try this: disconnect the monitor and take it outside. Remove the cover from the monitor and use an air hose to, gently, blow out the insides, arounf=d the circuit boards, etc. A monitor is one of the best made vacumms known to man. They collect everything! This might help. Be carefull not to touch anything in there. There are charges built up on capacitors and the CRT itself that will flat knock you on your keester if you touch them. I know, I've done it while replacing CRT's. Just be carefull. If it doesn't help, the monitor will work ok, it's just how long can you stand it? As for fans, replace them with good quality ball bearing or air bearing fans. Good luck :)
