I have my monitor set to 60 hertz as the refresh rate. It will go to 100 hertz. So how do I know which one it should be on?? Anyone have any ideas?

Windows xp automatically selects the highest refresh rate supported by your monitor. If you increase the refresh rate, you risk damaging your monitor. To check and see the highest refresh rate your monitor supports right click the desktop, click properties, settings, click the advanced button, then click monitor. Make sure "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" is checked. XP will then tell you the highest refresh rate your monitor supports.

The monitors manual should be able to tell you, but it all depends on which resolution you have selected, the higher the resolution, the lower the refresh rate must be. I have an OLD crt which works like this: Resolution 800x600 = Refresh Rate 85Hz MAX Resolution 1024x768 = Refresh Rate 60Hz MAX So get your resolution selected, then up the refresh rate notch by notch until your screen goes blank, this will not damage your monitor, it is simply Xp's cut-off switch, your monitor will resume screen in 15 seconds. The refresh rate you had BEFORE your screen went blank is the maximum you can have for your selected resolution. I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

To add further to this,, 60Hz HURTS!! You have got a modern monitor, but when things are initially installed,, the default is usually set to 60Hz. You should be able to up it to 85Hz at 1024x768 and 16 or 32 Bit colours. This is much better and headaches will not occur!...:o) SAFE COMPUTING.....:o)

I have a KDS Xtreme Flat monitor, 19 " and I set it too 100 hertz at 1152 x 864. It is also 32 bit color. The 100 was the maximum that it showed for my monitor in the display properties.

Make sure the drivers for your monitor have been installed, whether XP detects your monitor or not - if XP does not recognize your monitor, it will use Plug and Play defaults - you will then have the maximum safe available settings to choose from for your monitor.

My friend increased his refresh rate to 100 to get higher fps in video games.....It worked for a while then all of a sudden BOOM. XP didnt preven that from happening.
