Comment:
Does anyone know which type of memory would be called for by an Athlon XP 1700+ cpu and an asus motherboard? I can't remember which is the best that it can use at all, i.e. PC100, PC133, PC2100, PC3300, etc.
Also does anyone know what the likely limit is on how much memory I can install? 512MB? 1GB? 2GB?

You need to know your particular motherboard. Look it up here at ASUS. Just click your board.

Different motherboards use different speed memory for a given CPU? Is tehre anyway to tell what kind of motherboard I have without disassembling the computer?

Download AIDA32 or Sandra (both freeware). Either one of them should tell you the MB you have and the type of memory you are currently running.

Download and run Belarc Advisor. It should tell you which mobo you have.

aida32 has a field called "motherboard name". Some programs only ID the chipset and/or manufacturer. Not sure about sandra or belarc.
