I have a choice between 2 laptops one is a IBM thinkpad 380ED it has a xircom modem (56K) and it has 98se installed
the other is a compaq armada 4131T
and it has a 33.6 MHZ pc card modem by us robotics..it has windows 95 installed
I really don't know much about either so could you tell me which one is best and why
also on the compaq one the modem has no place for a phone line to plug in it has a different type plug-in..thanks

IBM
Compaq put the a lot of crappy stuff on their computers, and they are the worst computer maker

DO NOT buy Any.
It is free (somebody give it for FREE), I will pick IBM because it is 166 MMX with 56 K modem.( armada is 133 no MMx and 33.6 modem)

Agreed,
Neither are worth much but if they were free I would go for the IBM on their track record for durability alone.

Ditto with choosing the IBM. The slighlty faster processor is reason enough.
The plug on the Compaq is probably a network card instead of a modem. It would be good if you have a T1 line or hook to a network at work. You'd have to install a modem to use it with a phone line.
Also, I like Windows '98 better than '95.
Best Luck,
Bob

Thanks all for the information..can that ibm Laptop hold Xp? and if so being that I have never done anything this serious to any computer...how do i get xp on there..I have it on cd and I know I would have to clear 98se off...so could someone give me a link to the steps starting with step one!
thanks
oh here are the specs on the ibm laptop

The minimum system requirements for Windows XP can be found at the Microsoft website. I doubt XP would run on either of the laptops you listed. Officially XP requires a 266mhz computer. It may physically install on your 'new' laptop, but it won't run well, and newer XP features won't work at all.
You'll be happiest with your laptop if you choose software roughly the same age as the computer. The 166mhz processor was first released in 1997. So Windows '95 or '98 would be appropriate.
Best Luck, and have fun with your new "toy",
Bob
