Specs: Windows XP Professional, Pentium(R) 4 1.7ghz - 512 ram
I am helping a disabled friend to purchase an Hp desktop at a local Staples because they have free delivery and in-house service...plus good warranty program for him.
What I need help with, is figuring out what he needs to take advantage of current and upcoming technology.
He is home a lot and uses the internet to communicate and entertain himself. He doesn't play games much...but, does watch video, streams video and likes to be able to load video from friends sites. I don't know what is happening with Google TV or Web TV ....but, being able to communicate with his TV sounds like a possible advantage in the future
Please offer suggestions on what he needs to have in this new computer ASAP. Thanks

It depends on what his disability is because it isn't the particular computer that's important - they are all essentially the same, it's how you have Windows set up (there are a number of features available such as larger fonts, sounds, sticky keys etc.) and also what sort of peripherals you have - mobility problems may require special mice alternatives, or larger keys on the keyboard etc. For 'communicating with his TV' then you may be talking about webcams, which are built into laptops, but can be cheapy added to desktops.

Your best option is to make a list of their needs, then go into the retailer and ask them for a system that will meet those needs, and get the salesperson to demonstrate each one.

Thanks for your suggestions Johnr.

The fellow I am trying to help has abilities to type, see, and get around his apartment. But, he is unable to get out much, do to breathing problems.

I was looking more for suggestions on things like RAM, speed, graphic abilities and tweaks I should look for? Naturally a new Hp will have Windows 7....but, is there one version that will work better...for the things he may wish to do?

If he is going to need certain amounts of RAM or Video cards over what comes standard in a model...it would probably be better to have them upgrade before he gets the computer? I feel a little lost concerning all the choices/options?

This system would be adequate for him. it has onboard radeon 4270 graphics, which is as good as it gets right now. It comes with a 20 inch monitor and all the peripherals. Check it out.If you don't want a touch screen, any of the other HP's would work also.

Thanks for suggestion Grasshopper.

I called about that computer and it has lots of capabilities, but only has a 8" high screen (Staples guy measured over phone). ...Which is a bit too small. Will be checking some others out at Staples but couldn't find any with same AMD processor that machine had? ...I don't know if the others are up to par with that one?

I couldn't find another with onboard radeon 4270 graphics? Others I saw on their online catalog...appear to have lesser versions, so far? That model had a "touch screen" which might be kinda neat? ...But, probably not really a "must have". It also had wireless keyboard and mouse...I though was cool.
