i have an old athlon 900mhz computer with AGP*4 and was wondering what was the most powerful graphics card i could install without any problems, looking for nvidia card.
thanks.
help help HELP!!!!!!!!!

What card have you got now? what games are you thinking of playing? There arent really any suitable graphics cards by nvidia that would work with that system. Maby you should concider getting an ATI and buying a cheap 9550 for that system. Maby a 9600 if you really like. Still you probably wont be able to play any newer games with that rig even if you have a 7800GS.

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe
200GB SATA / 80Gb IDE
256Mb MSI 6800 Ultra

thanks for the response matt, this pooter doesnt have enough juice to play most of the new games coming out today but it can still handle old games like call of duty ok if you switch off all the bells and whistles.
at the moment i have a xfx geforce mx 4000 card which is ok but its a low spec card.
dont know why you would say nvidia cards wont work with this pooter, that's all ive ever had.
if i install a graphics card that's too powerful the cpu wont be able to keep up so its a waste of money to over spec the card.

hmm..nVidia is my fav..i would go with the 6600..its the budget card these days..prob for 100-120 bucks..and i would look fo rone wik the 128 MB Ram..i used to have an old 900MHz AMD..good durable little thing..lol i still have it in my closet.
MB: Albatron K8X250GB Pro
CPU: AMDSempron 3300+~2.0GHZ OC @ 2.4GHz

RAM: 1.5 GB GEiL PC3200
Sound: SoundBlaster Creative Audigy SE

The MX4000 is a 64-bit low end piece of crap, just about any card will outperform it except for maybe another 64-bit low end piece of crap...lol

I wasnt saying that nvidia cards wouldent work, just that you might be better off buying an ATI. The FX5200 through to the FX5600 were all poor performers and you would be better off with a 9550 or a 9600 like the one jam suggests. Although I didnt think of the 6600, that may be a good choice too.
My last rig was a 600MHz Athlon with a crappy 64Bit 9550 and I could play Dawn of war at lowish settings at 800x600. Then my freid got a P4 EE and whooped me before In knew it.. a lot of lag!! Still I was playing games fairly well and concidering your rig has enough ram you should be OK with games like that. Good luck.

The Radeon 9550 is a good card, provided you get the 128-bit version...it's nothing more than an underclocked 9600. Actually, the 9600XT shouldn't even be lumped in with the other 9600s (9550, 9600SE, 9600, 9600Pro) because it's based on a different (& more advanced) GPU

Below is a guide to see if a new video card would overtask your Power Supply Unit.Just a thought.
