Hi, I have a Seagate STA360015A hdd and want to run a diagnostic on it. I went to Seagate's website and found Sea tools, however there are two flavors. One for dos and one for windows. Does anyone know which one I should use? I do have a floppy drive if that matters in the choice. Thanks Bluejay

Start with the windows based tool. If that doesn't do what you need, try the DOS based one. If you use the DOS one, you'll need to make a bootable floppy and such, which is more work that just using the Windows one.

IMO the DOS version is free of Windows kernel overhead. You get a more realistic diagnosis by booting straight to the program copied to a floppy disc that have been formatted with operating system for self-booting.

Wow that was fast. I thought the dos version was the better of the two. I assume that I can download it to my hdd and then transfer to floppy, or should I download direct to floppy? Any difference? Bluejay

Files usually need to be unpacked. Download first then read how to configure the disk.

Also to make the disk bootable, first insert a BLANK disk in the floppy dirve, then from the command prompt, run:

C:\>format a: /s

The /s switch will add files necessary to make the floppy disc bootable.

I figured that is how it would be. Why do you want to run the utility?

As stated in some of my previous posts here and xp forum my system rather suddenly started to respond very slowly to commands. I thought my mouse was bad and just didn't feel right. So I got a wireless one (love it)but problem still there. I ran spybot, adaware, NAV, and did a HJT log comparing it to one run earlier this year all with no abnormalities. Also did a system restore to about a month earlier. No change. I had mentioned before that when I clicked on the start button, sometimes it would tell me there were too many items to show even though there were only 3. Since the machine is now 5 years old and it is on about 8 hours a day I figured I would test the drive to rule it out. Bluejay

Don't know what happened CN would not let me repost until rebooted my machine. My question was. In checking my boot sequence I found cd 1st,hdd next removable device 3rd and IBA 4.1.08 SLOT 0140 last. What is the last one? Is my floppy the removeable that I should set before my hdd? Bluejay

Set the floppy to boot before the HD.

Your problem might have been because you could have edited your #8 and added the content that is #9.

As far as the boot order goes. The questins you pose are not easy to answer, as BIOS options are different with each BIOS. I would say you could determine what is referred to by process of elimination. If the floopy drive has its own listing then that isn't the removable device referred to. Could be USB devices. Eliminate them by looking for other listings that would apply. At any rate your boot order is moot. The 3rd and 4th devices aren't in play are they? If you have a floppy drive installed I suggest you set the boot order to 1st=none, 2nd=CD, 3rd=HD0, 4th?. The reason for the none entry is that if you need to boot to the floppy all that is needed is to change one entry.

You can set your boot order any way you prefer but there could be rare occasions when you may not be able to access the BIOS screens to change it and still need to boot to floppy or CD. BTW, setting the CD in the boot order will slow the boot order down slightly if you have multiple optical drives, as the BIOS will search for bootable media in each one.

I haven't a clue what that is. You should be able to change things in the BIOS settings. Might be a USB device. Do you leave any flash or external drives connected always?

No usb at present but I do use removeable flash drives. My printer is usb and my wireless mouse is usb. Both connected to rear connectors. I use front for my flash drives. Time to leave work now. If I get time I will check back from home tonight. If not, tomorrow. Bluejay

Very interesting. Wonder why google didn't turn that up? So I guess then that my floppy has to be the removeable device selection as I know what the cd and hdd are. Thanks for the research. I will try that at work tomorrow,(if I make it supposed to get big snow) Bluejay
