Comment: i just bought my computer and it had originally 1.8ghz and 2gb ram... until there was a power surge that happened (didnt have an outlet thing with a fuse) burned the chipset. So i went to a guy to get a new chipset installed. After a day i just noticed that i had lost 1GB OF RAM!@!!! Can anyone tell me wut has happened to my precious ram? Did i get JACKED?? Or did something else happen? Plz comment

Reply: (edit)What chipset did the guy replace. Unless he was a MBoard repairman I think you may be confused or got scammed. As far as your memory goes, try reseating it. Watch the screens at POST to see how much is recognised at startup. Download Everest home and use it to check what it says about your RAM and finally, remove one stick at a time to determine which sticks, or slots may not be working. The RAM may have gotten fried or the slot could be damaged. That can be determined by moving good RAM around. If the RAM is damaged, MOST RAM has a lifetime warranty. Concact the manufacturer for an RMA number.

Reply: (edit)or if the motherboard got replaced, it might be that the new one can not deal with the density of the ram. I dont know how many sticks you had, if you had two, it might be that the replacement mobo (if in deed it was replaced) is only recording 512mb in each slot and not the whole 1gb in each. I have seen this kind of problem with high density ram. eg. a 1gb stick with 16 chips on it might show 1gb in a certain mobo but if it was a 1gb stick with 8 chips on, it might only show 512mb as that mobo might only be able to recognise 64mb per ram chip.

Reply: (edit)to follow on from above, the first thing i would do is look at the ram sticks to see if they say on them (usually a sticky label)what they are.

Reply: (edit)If you have integrated graphics some system memory will be allocated but I've never heard of ANY onboard graphics that uses 1GB of RAM so I would say the guy is wrong. I believe the most RAM on board graphics MIGHT use would be 256MB. More likely 128 or 64.

Reply: (edit)No, integrated graphics can't use 1GB of RAM. Boot into the BIOS screens and look at how much memory is being shared by the video.

Reply: (edit)Watch the startup screens during the POST. You should see instructions on how to enter the BIOS. It is usually just one keystroke, like delete or F10. You need to continously tap that key until the screen states you are entering the BIOS. If you have a manual for your MBoard I suggest you look it over. From your original post I would suspect you have a bad RAM module or socket from the power surge. I suggest again, that you remove all but one RAM stick and try booting with one at a time moving the stick to every slot, one by one and try every stick like that. Reread my response #1.

Reply: (edit)Then you have fast boot enabled in the BIOS. You state your computer is an Intel. That is the MBoard isn't it? Is this a home built system? If so, try tapping the Del key repeatedly, as soon as the machine starts. As I stated TWICE, I think you have a RAM problem. Without more detailed info I can't say what might be going on. As cliffpage mentioned, if the MBord NOW in your computer can't handle the RAM that is installed it could be seen as half of the actual amount. Download Everest like I suggested and get some info on this system then post back. Find Everest here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4...

Reply: (edit)Under the memory listing there is a heading called SPD. This should tell you exactly what RAM you have.

Reply: (edit)It is possible. It also could be high density RAM that can't be properly used by the current MB. You Could pull out the stick, read the data on each chip on the module, count the modules and post back here with the info. Of course you could get lucky and have a sticker on the stick saying what it is.

Reply: (edit)You need to discharge the static from yourself. If you have a power supply with a switch on it you can safely shut off the switch then touch a metal part of the case before touching anything inside the case. This method works if you have your computer plugged into a properly grounded 3 prong plug.
