I have to replace the nic in my desktop emachine. I have taken the side panel off but don't know which is the network interface card.

Your network interface is part of the motherboard. You can't remove it but you can disable it and install an add in card. All that said, I doubt there is anything wrong with your network chip.

Tell us why you think it is bad.

It is usually found as an onboard device. Most machines now use onboard ethernet, not a separate add-in card. So look where the mouse, keyboard etc are; and find the nic, looks like a larger phone plug. If the onboard nic is malfunctioning or you don't have a nic, you can add a nic card they are not expensive.
