Dual monitors are also possible with on modern graphic card as all newer ones have at least two connectors!

The point of SLI is that you can get up to about 40% more power out of two cards than one.
I've seen some of those tests where some older not supported games had quite a bit loss in fps performance but as they had been older a normal 6800GT usually had a very high fps rate and even with the loss in SLI mode it was still way above the lever where you get unstable movements.

If you really need that amount of graphic power is something you need to decide for yourself. Unless you're a really enthusiastic play the answer surely is NO but if you are it's might be a YES!

A nice option about SLI is that you might be able to upgrade the system with the same card later. But sadly you need exactly the same build of the card with the same graphic bios on it. The bios you can flash but getting exactly the same version of that card might get a little tricky!

I have the A8N-SLI Deluxe myself but not because of the SLI but because of the build in S-ATA Raid5 controller. But the idea of being able to add another 6600GT later to boost up my graphic power sometime in the future is a nice one. If it ever happens I don't know because it's as likely that I will get an even faster single card for not much more then!
