I've just got a new Compaq with Iintel Core 2 Duo processor, and Nvidia GeForce 8800 graphics card plus 250gig hard drive and 2gb Ram but after anything from 20 mins to two hours the machine hangs for three seconds releases for three seconds then hangs for three seconds in perpetuo. So I have to reboot. Any suggestions ? It doesn't seem to matter whether a program is running or not.

I've just got a new Compaq
The machine is obviously defective. The best suggestion is to return it for exchange or refund. Personally I dislike Compaq brands anyway.

I agree with XpUser. My guess might be that the CPU fan is stopping. I think Intel CPUs will stop when they get too hot and then start up again when they cool off a little.
