If you plan on sharing a broadband internet connection then get yourself a router.

If not then a hub or switch would be sufficent.

Routers have more features including firewalls, DHCP, etc.

Routers are smart, hubs are dumb. Hubs are fine for expanding the number of possible connections to a network. Routers allow connection to Wide Area Networks, such as broadband internet.

This is true. But I would get a switch for this purpose. Switches are smarter than hubs but not as smart as a router.

If you just want to connect two computers without Internet connection you don't need anything. Just a crossover cable between the two. But that will restrict you to just the two computers. If you want to add a third you will need a switch or a hub.

However, as previously mentioned, as soon as the Internet comes into the equation you will need a router.

Hi again,

I thought you had decided on using ICS to set up your network.

You could use a hub and two network cables to create your network. This will work just as well as a single crossover cable. The only advantage is that it will be easier to add other computers to the network.

On top of what I already told you in the Win9X forum, a lower end router usuually includes a 4 port switch. If you choose to use a router, it might be cheaper these days to get a wireless one. You can turn off the wireless part until you are ready to use it.
